Eastmont Intel Computer Clubhouse

Responding to the ever-widening divide in technology access and computer literacy in underserved areas of Oakland, CA, OCCUR established their community technology center: The Eastmont Technology Center, home of the Eastmont Intel Computer Clubhouse.

About OCCUR
OCCUR is a 55 year-old community-service organization that addresses civil rights and social justice issues such as housing discrimination, local employment and federal program policy decisions, educates thousands of nonprofit organizations in capacity building and organization development, and implements financial literacy and consumer education programs for low-income residents and families toward the promotion of a more sustainable community economy. (To learn more about OCCUR and the other programs we offer, please visit www.occurnow.org.)

Eastmont Technology Center
In 1997, OCCUR established the Eastmont Technology Center (ETC) with support from the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Originally called the Eastmont Computing Center, ETC provides free computer and Internet access, free computer classes for adults in English and Spanish, and a free technology based after-school program for youth ages 10-18, to more than 400 users each week and is nationally recognized as a community technology center (CTC) best practice. Now at its new location at 6948 Foothill Boulevard in Oakland, CA, ETC is thriving as a best practice digital empowerment facility. ETC is also home to an innovative digital technology-based afterschool program entitled the Eastmont Intel Computer Clubhouse.

Eastmont Intel Computer Clubhouse
In 2002, ETC was awarded a grant from the Intel Foundation to support the opening of a Intel Computer Clubhouse, joining the worldwide Computer Clubhouse Network, of over 110 Clubhouses that provide thousands of youth with access to resources, skills, and experiences to help them succeed in their careers, contribute to their communities, and lead outstanding lives.

The Eastmont Intel Computer Clubhouse is a creative and safe out-of-school learning environment where under-served youth, ages 10-18, work with mentors to explore their own ideas, develop skills, and build self-confidence through the use of technology.

Participants learn to express themselves fluently with new technology following the Clubhouse learning model, which is guided by four core principles: Support Learning through Design Experiences, Help Youth Build on Their Own Interests, Support and Cultivate Community, and Create an Environment of Respect and Trust.
